How to start an exercise programme for the first time. So you want to get fit but you are not sure what that means or how to do it. Here are a few pointers to get you started:

1. Decide what you want. Do you want to lose a few pounds? Be able to walk up the stairs without feeling out of breath? Run a Half Marathon?

2. Talk to people who know. Always consult your doctor before starting on a new fitness regime and talk to qualified fitness instructors/trainers at your local gym for advice.

3. Start gently. Ease yourself into your new routine. 20-30 mins once or twice a week balancing cardiovascular training with core and weight training is fine to begin with and then build up to progress.

4. Make your fitness goals achievable and realistic and stick to your target. Do not give up.

5. Stay motivated. It is sometimes difficult to keep going. Here are a few things that may help:

Find a fitness partner to train with, keep an exercise log, schedule workouts in your diary and stick to them, bring some music, make it part of your life like brushing your teeth.
